I have a 2000 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L engine, and I am having the same symptoms. At about 9000 miles, it developed a knock (sounded like a lifter) when cold. The dealer did a GM-recommended "decarbon treatment" which did no good. The truck now has 15,000 miles and the knock is getting worse - even happens some when the engine is warm.
2009 Ford F150 5.4l with 130k miles. Engine had a ticking sound that got progressively louder. Almost like lifter noise. While idling at a light, the engine died and upon restarting sounded awful. It barely ran. After trying to diagnose it a little more I started it one last time. It started up great and sounded perfect. The ticking was .They tried putting different tires and wheels on the truck off a new truck, checked ujoints, drive line, with no results. I pulled cover off rear myself to find what I thought was alot of metal shavings and noticed alot of wear on differential gears but ring and pinion did not seem too bad but I have no way to check actual tolerances or backlash.

Although this is important, reliability and safety, as well as fit and finish/overall driveability and useability are far more important. Of course, in the Silverado Vs. F150 topic, all anyone heard spew from your sewer hole was torque.
